Enjoying art and culture for free once a month
How about enjoying a bit of art, history and culture on a Sunday? How about enjoying it with free admission?
Then mark the first Sunday of the month on your calendar and make note of the following State museums (and archaeological areas) across Tuscany where you can take advantage of free entrance to all as part of the #DomenicalMuseo initiative sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture. In Florence, the city run museums extend free entrance only to local residents on the same day (the day is called "Domenica Metropolitana").
** ALL OF THE STATE MUSEUMS below offer FREE entrance to everyone on the FIRST SUNDAY of every month. For 2023, there are some extra SPECIAL DAYS set at the natioanl level by the Ministry of Culture: free entrance for everyone on Tuesday, April 25, for Celebration of Liberation Day, Friday, June 2 in celebration of the Italian Republic; and Saturday, November 4 to celebrate National Unity and Armed Forces. **
Which State museums can I visit for free in Tuscany?
I've compiled a list of "State" museums in Tuscany so that you can have a full list; many of these participate in the #DomenicalMuseo (and to other special openings announced during the year, such as free entry to women on March 8th, International Womens Day) to make it easy for you to find museums near you if you're here on a first Sunday of the month and want to take advantage of free entrance! You will find something near you to visit, wherever you might be.
For the latest news and updates, including a check on opening hours, please visit the Ministry of Culture website that lists all the places that participate in the Domenica al Museo initiative. The page links to each site, with hours and contact info, and also lists all of the other sites across Italy, not just Tuscany so check it if you're in Italy on the first weekend in Italy.
